Their nick name appears to be "bird raptor." These hawks are very rare in summer. These hawks are uncommon in spring ,fall, and in winter. This hawk is a mature Red Shouldered Hawk. U.S Distribution: This hawk resides primarily in the Eastern U.S, with an exception of a population in coastal California.
Identification: The Red-Shouldered hawks are identified by their Reddish or barred breast and their black and white banded tail and flight feathers. The red shoulder is evident when viewed from behind in a perched position. The tail is long, especially when compared to other hawks. Immature birds have a streaked chest. During the breeding season this hawk is often quite vocal.
Habitat: This hawk prefers deciduous coniferous mixed woodlands. It is more of a forest dweller than the red-tailed hawk. It favors areas that border on lakes, streams or other wetlands. Breeding habitat is often large contiguous tracts of forest. This hawk is not found in all areas that meet these criteria, they are often sporadic even in suitable habitats.
Food/Hunting Techniques: Often seen soaring above fields and meadows the Red Shouldered hawk prefers to hunt in woodlands, often spotting prey from a perch and attacking directly. Varied food source including small mammals, birds, snakes, frogs, and insects.
Other: Red shouldered hawks often hunt from tree branches. It dives on small snakes, insects and other small animals. Hawks dive very quickly. For example the hawk can dive 175 miles per hour. (A jet airplane takes off from the airport runway at 175 miles per hour) A duck hawk can catch birds in mid air. Some people train hawks to hunt small animals and birds for them. These people are called Falconers. This method is called Falconry. They can live in many places such as southeastern Canada, United States, the eastern and central part of the world, California and Mexico. These hawks are excellent hunters. A three day old Red Shouldered hawk sits by two unhatched eggs this helps it keep warm. The young remains in the warm nest from four to eight weeks. They spend much time hopping about flapping their tiny wings preparing for learning how to fly. As the sun sets at the end of the day , hawks everywhere return to their nests. Another name for the Red shouldered hawk is the "Bueto Lintes". This bird is very large compared to other hawks. Their courtship dance displays their power or strength. Pairs of hawks often build their large stick nests on a rock ledge or a sturdy tree branch. Female hawks have from two to four eggs every month. Once hatched, the nestlings are cared equally from both parents the male provides most of the food. Wile the female broods or cares for the young at the nest. By Fall the baby hawks will be full grown but a duller color.
