Did you know that last year Texas had the most tornadoes? For 50 years they have had 5,500. That's about 110 tornadoes a year. Tornadoes are small but powerful. They are like a big twister spinning at high speeds.
Did you also know that tornadoes can form within a hurricane? The wind is so strong in a tornado that it blows houses down and they can also kill people. They have the strongest winds in the world. Wind in a tornado can go up to 200 miles per hour but only in the middle of it. A tornado is like a twister that extends to the floor of the earth. Some tornadoes don't touch ground. In the northern hemisphere tornadoes spin counter clockwise. In the southern hemisphere they spin clockwise.
Tornadoes are sometimes called cyclones or twisters. Tornadoes don't usually last more than an hour.
A tornado usually forms when a severe thunderstorm comes. When the moist cold air and the warm rising air colide or join together, it may form into a tornado. Tornadoes can also cause major floods.
This is the damage done after a tornado.
