Status-
Florida has seven species
of snakes that are on the threatened list, including the eastern
indigo snake. In addition, the Florida Pine snake is a species of special
concern. Although not endangered, this snake requires protection
to prevent it from
being on the threatened
or endangered list.
Habitat-
Snakes can live in
a variety of habitats worldwide except in Antarctica, New Zealand,
Ireland, and Iceland. In Florida, habitat destruction has affected the
number of snakes. Animals such as the gopher tortoise need
land to burrow. Theseburrows, in turn, are home to many varieties of snakes
such as the threatenedEastern Indigo Snake.
Reproduction-
Depending on the species,
snakes either bear live young or lay eggs. Mating usually happens
in the fall or early spring.
